My sketches are the first step toward my completed paintings. Using off-white Canson drawing paper (my favorite because they come in the actual sizes I want to work in without cropping off a half in or so for the spiral binding), I work out the composition, define and refine the figures, and finally tighten the sketch to the very line I will trace through graphite paper onto watercolor paper. Sometimes I will go over the sketch with pastel to help myself find the best color scheme for the final painting.
